Usually (from my Wii U experience) because it's connecting you with 3 other players who are likely using wifi and have bad interenet meaning everyone gets dragged down to their laggy level.

It's kinda insane cause ARMS was my first Nintendo online multiplayer game and it works really well (much better than Mario Tennis Aces and Smash), then i tried Splatoon 2 and that was also okay (not as good but serviceable) in fact last year i didn't get why people kept complaining about Nintendo online. Holy shit I was not aware of this and it completely unacceptable. I wonder if the problem is within the game or because 90% of the player base plays via Wi-Fi, and more often than not, bad Wi-Fi.
