You get smash attacked before you can throw up your shield. You can also challenge yourself in cool ways when you play online: no shields (if you are too passive), air attacks only, etc etc. We all go through that phase where the win rate is sub-20%, but if you keep trying and avoid making major mistakes, you'll get better as you lean what works and what doesn't.

Here’s what I think might help (depends on characters tho): focus on finding patterns in your opponent. You can watch all sorts of videos on neutral and punishes and what have you, but I'll guess it makes more sense as words than actions and is kinda hard to see the immediate applications.
