Hurricanes develop over warm water and use it as an energy source. Hurricanes south of the Earth's equator spin clockwise. Most of the damage is caused by flooding and storm surge. As well as violent winds and heavy rain, hurricanes can also create tornadoes, high waves and widespread flooding. They cause destruction to property and loss of life every year. Hurricanes also cause damage with high speed winds that can blow down treesand damage homes. When hurricanes strike land they can cause huge amounts of damage. This “new” air then becomes warm and moist, and rises, too, beginning a continuous cycle that forms clouds. Storm surge is when the ocean level rises at the coastline due to the power of the storm. Hey Kids, after explaining Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano in detail, Dr. Binocs is here to explain Hurricane in his own style. Hurricanes need warm water to develop and continuous access to warm water to increase in strength.

If there is enough warm water to feed the storm, a hurricane forms!

The warm, moist air above the ocean surface rises, causing air from surrounding areas to be “sucked” in. Hurricanes usually form in tropical areas of the world. Hurricanes begin over tropical and subtropical ocean water. Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters near the equator. Then a hurricane—a swirling mass of wind, rain, thunder, and chaos—will intrigue you. Hurricanes north of the Earth's equator spin counterclockwise.
