This is a thought/reflection piece of work by Von Trier (his stuff generally is, but this is primary that) and the brilliance of the man’s mind is evident. In Dogville, even the most phosophical character proves to be a coward in the name of self-preservation and Grace, the film's victim, finally snaps, providing a shocking conclusion (similar to the central character in Von Trier's Europa) when lured by power. A tethered dog is more an idea than the real thing. and the Terms and Policies, Two of the things I greatly dislike are opera and stage plays/live theater. Coming Soon. This is, quite simply, one of the best movies i have ever seen - and i have seen a lot of movies. All Critics (168) I hoped, and expected, that it would soon transition into a more realistic view but it did not. I did not realize that this was not a "movie" until I began to watch it. You're almost there! The movie is for people who can think! MyFlixer is a Free Movies streaming site with zero ads. A film about morality corruption, doubts, lost of humanity and sins. |, April 29, 2009 It's not that the stage play thing is wrong, it's fine (especially since the story is reminiscent of Greek tragedy). Ambitious, intriguing but fatally self-important ... For all of "Dogville's" strengths -- its powerful performances, the ingenious staging, how quickly and completely the audience accepts its stylized reality -- its take-home message is, ultimately, measly. What Lars von Trier has achieved is avant-gardism for idiots. This movie was a real surprise. The film was shot in Sweden from Triers’ ideas about America (he’s never been there). It's de Sade's "Justine" played out on the set of "Our Town." Among its ten commandments: "Shooting must be done on location"; "The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa"; "The camera must be hand-held"; "Special lighting is not acceptable.". In this film, which is a bit of both, she acquits herself gamely. The film begins with a prologue in which we meet a dozen or so of the fifteen citizens. But be warned, this is not a film one watches to be entertained. Definitely a strong film for those who enjoy the creativity of theatre or literature and how it stimulates the imagination; for those with a willing suspension of disbelief. Made us come here to listen to a lot of nonsense. I find myself collecting his films so this is my most recent acquisition and I am not sorry. The houses are drawn out by white lines on the floor where people live and work, so no walls, but you need to imagine they can’t see each other. Dogville is Lars von Trier's indictment of American values and the way we treat each other and outsiders, and while it does have a clear message and purpose, at three hours it overstays its welcome and becomes tedious rather than insightful. Zentropa Entertainments, It holds your attention quite well, setting you up for an emotionally heavy ride, but the payoff is quite worth it. Still, Dogville is definitely a film to watch for two reasons: (1) an excellent performance by Nicole Kidman and (2) food for thought, one is definitely given a few things to think about.
